I got given a notice to quit to be evicted from my house?

Ever since then i have been on the council register for a place they said it would take 3 weeks, but i have now been waiting for more than 6 weeks, however i only have 1 week left before i am suppose to be leaving my current house which the notice to quit is about. Can they throw me onto the street because the council are taking so long?
