My Best friend failed the 8th Grade,how can I cheer him up?

I mean he has been doing bad in many subjects but passing every year to upper grade,he was shocked when he realized he failed,I called him and he was crying and stuff and then hanged up.I tried to cheer him up but it didn't work.Its been 2 days and I called today and he said he was okay.I was doing most of the talking,he barely said anything assuring that he wasn't sad anymore.Now he went to the country side with his family for some days.How can I cheer him up?
